Commuting between Office and Home - A tiring drive

These days lots of construction of flyovers and Delhi Metro is going on in the way between my office and home. I usually take the route through ring road to commute between my office and home which is well known to me, but yesterday evening while returning from office I took some other unknown route for trying to see if it takes less time and has less traffic. To my surprise, it included some roads with bad conditions and also took more time to reach home and I had to ask the route to my destination (home) from the passer byes. It nearly takes 1.30 hrs to reach to my home in evening, but yesterday that route took me more than 2 hrs to reach my home and I was very tired.

So, I have decided that I will always go with known route and not experiment much with other routes even if some traffic is there on my normal route.

All in all, Yesterday's commute to home was a bad experience for me.

Anatomy of a .Net Web Service

Folks, lets examine how a request for a web service is handled by .Net when it comes in from any client:

When a request comes into IIS for a .Net web service, IIS examines the request and determines that it is being sent a file that ends with the extn. .asmx. The ASP.Net handler is registered with IIS as handling this extn.; therefore, this request is handed over to the ASP.Net process.

At this point, the ASP.Net worker process examines the request and discovers that it has a handler registered in machine.config file, for a request for resources with the extn. .asmx. It therefore invokes this handler and passes the request onto it.

Next, the handler creates an instance of the class defined in the handler, and uses reflection to examine which operations the class supports and how those operations should be routed. By default, operations are mapped to methods using the SOAPAction HTTP header, but this can be changed to map to the first child element of the SOAP body.

Once the message is routed, the handler uses the XML Serializer to deserialize the request XML into the parameters the method is expecting. Once the method returns, the return value and any out parameters are mapped back into XML using XML Serializer. Then, a response SOAP message is created that wraps this XML , and the response is sent back via ASP.Net's HTTPResponse context.

If an exception is thrown, then it is wrapped into a SOAPException and a SOAP fault is returned instead, with the HTTP status code set to 500. (For non-error responses, the status code is 200 or OK).

.Net: Important Scenario for Abstract Class and Interface

Hi .Net lovers,

I assume you all know what is an Abstract class and what is an Interface, and the question always comes in mind when to use-which:

The most important scenario of deciding when to use Abstract Class or an Interface comes by trying to establish an IS-A relationship (abstract class) or CAN-DO relationship (Interface) between the related objects.

1. Abstract Class e.g.
A "Manager" IS AN "Employee" and a "BusinessAnalyst" IS ALSO AN "Employee"
so for this relationship we can create an "Employee" Abstract class and the other classes "Manager" and "BusinessAnalyst" should derive from it and may provide their own implementations...........

2. Interface e.g.
There will an annual appraisal for all types of Employees in an Organization. so, all Employees must establish a certain kind of contract to fulfill for Appraisal which is done by an "IAppraisal" interface which might have 2 methods - viz.

public void IncreaseGrade(); //The Manager will be promoted by a different Grade than other types of Employees

public void IncreaseSalary(double percentage); //The %age increase in Manager's Salary will be different (may depend on new Grade also) than other types of Employees

Hope this clarifies the scenario.

Other aspects to decide are Versioning and Ease of Use (like the existing Abstract class provides some implementation and change in its implementation code does not cause the derived classes to recompile while a change in contract or interface causes the child class to be recompiled) between the two.

.Net Web Services: Rules Governing Objects that can be Serialized to XML

Following are the considerations that should be kept in mind while designing data classes that need to be used as parameters or return type of Web Method(s) in .Net Web Service(s), so that the concerned Web Service(s) can be consumed by any client:-

1. Only classes with a public, default constructor will be serialized to XML: This means that .Net will not recognize an object to be serialized to XML at all, if it doesn't have a parameterless default constructor i.e. either the class should have no explicit constructor at all; or, if it does have an explicit constructor then it should also have an explicit parameterless public constructor

.Net: Garbage Collector and Finalizers

Garbage Collector and Finalizers have an important difference to be marked of:

The responsibility of a garbage collector is to manage and utilize only the memory of the .net application and to call the finalizer (or destructor).

Finalizers(or destructors) are not responsible for memory management. Rather, they are responsible for freeing up resources such as database connections, file handles, open ports and other resources that must be freed when the object in question is garbage collected bcoz the garbage collector doesn't know about them.

C# Imp. Basics - Ref and Out parameters

Well, I am still learning .net, so please excuse me for some confusing words.

Sometimes there is a confusion whether to pass the parameters to a method byreference (ref keyword) or using out keyword. As, both keywords are sometimes confused to be used to get the multiple return values from the target method.

1. When to use ref:
the parameters that are needed to be changed by the target method and the change in value is required to be visible after the method call returns should be passed byref.

first, the key thing to remember is that each parameter passed by ref must be initialized before passing to the target method (which will finally change their values) and the change will be visible after the target method call returns.

secondly, it is not mandatory to change the values of any of the parameter recieved as by ref in the target method.

2. When to use out:
out parameters are used when there is a certain need to return multiple values from a method call.

first, its not mandatory to initialize each parameter marked as out in the target method, before calling that method.

secondly, each parameter which is marked as out in the target method, must be assigned a value corresponding to its type in all code return paths of the target method implementation (otherwise compile error).

I am one of the music lovers of Cliff Richard's songs. Here is some of the biography on him taken from www.bbc.co.uk and www.vh1.com.

Britain's answer to Elvis Presley, Richard (born name Harry Webb) dominated the pre-Beatles British pop scene in the late '50s and early '60s. An accomplished singer with a genuine feel for the music, Richard's artistic legacy is nonetheless meager, as he was quickly steered toward a middle-of-the-road pop direction. Several of his late-'50s recordings, however, were genuinely exciting Presley-esque rockers -- especially his first hit, "Move It" (1958) -- and gave British teenagers their first taste of genuine homegrown rock & roll talent. Backed by the Shadows -- clean-cut instrumental virtuosos who became legends of their own -- Richard embarked on a truly awesome string of hit singles in Britain, scoring no less than 43 Top 20 hits between 1958 and 1969. One of these, although it was by no means one of the more successful, was an actual Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition (the ballad "Blue Turns to Grey").
In his homeland, Richard's popularity was diminished only slightly by the rise of the Beatles, but in his prime, he had a much rougher time in the U.S., hitting the Top 40 only three times (with "Living Doll" in 1959, "It's All in the Game" in 1963, and "Devil Woman" in 1976). Memorable Moments In Shahdara

Shahdara, A food lover's paradise in Delhi is the place where we started our childhood. Located in East of Delhi, its a place where u can find delicious delicacies like Gol Gappa's (Pani Puri), Dahi Bhalla, Chat Papri, Tikki and Lassi. The most popular of them is the Lassi designed and developed by Shyam Lassi Wala. Then there's Bedami Puri made by Kuber Puri Wala. Initially, in the 80s, the DTC buses used to come inside the town but then due to heavy traffic involved were moved to the main bus stand in Shahdara and people used to take Rickshaws from there houses to the bus stand. We lived there from 1976 to 1997 and enjoyed every moment of life there. We used to play cricket in our Nana's wonderful and big home which had a big varanda in it. Those were the golden moments of our life and we still miss a lot of not being there and occassionaly go there whenever we get time...............
